Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, The

Vermeer's universally acclaimed masterpiece "The Girl with a Pearl Earring" is a study of mastery in painting. Vermeer painted many undercoats, creating maturity of texture and color. Vermeer lavished utmost attention on the smallest detail, like using crushed lapis lazuli to create blue pigments, even when he couldn't afford it. Mastery of detail makes it possible to look at this portrait over and over and still see something fresh and enticing each time. The original, restored in 1994, is housed in the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, the Netherlands.
