The great Vincent van Gogh's most famous masterpiece is probably The Starry Night (Sternennacht). While the town is somewhat realistic, the tree and especially the stars and moon become more of an abstraction. Van Gogh applies thick, powerful brushstrokes, reflecting an agitated, almost manic state of mind that also contains a kind of inner peace.
